Project Profile_001: Sephiroth by ~Sephiroth7734:iconSephiroth7734:

Project Profile_001: Sephiroth

Name: Sephiroth Crescent [Seph-er-oth Kress-ent]

Aliases: "The Chosen One", "Cloud's Dark Side", "Sefirosu" (Japanese), "The One-Winged Angel", "Bizarro-Sephiroth", "Rebirth-Sephiroth", Safer-Sephiroth", "Seraph-Sephiroth", Seraphim-Sephiroth", "Sefa Sefirosu" (Japanese), "The Fallen Angel". "The Man in the Black Cape", "The Nightmare", "Experiment Number 1".

Gender: Male

Age: 24 (Before Crisis), 25 (Last Order & Crisis Core), 30 (Final Fantasy VII), 32 (Advent Children)

Birthdate: 1967 (month and day unknown)
[NOTE: Cloud's confirmed birthyear is 1976, and since Sephiroth is 9 years older than Cloud, that makes his birthyear nine years prior: 1967. It should be noted that 76 and 67 are inverts; relevant to Cloud and Sephiroth's opposition and rivalry.]

Hair Style: Hair is straight and goes about halfway down his thighs. His bangs are center-parted, shoulder-length, and raise approximately 4 to 5 inches into the air at a 60° angle before hanging down. The folds of the bangs vary between media. In the original Final Fantasy VII, his left bang was slightly higher than his right, with his left bang at a 20° slant and his right bang at a 70° slant. In other media, his bangs are symmetrical at a 50° slant and go down to about halfway down his torso. In his "Bizarro-Sephiroth" form, his bangs are possessed by the large cocoon in his image, and the smaller figure on top possesses the rest of his hair. In his "Seraphim-Sephiroth" form, he has no bangs.

Hair Color: Silver (in the concept designs by Yoshitaka Amano, his hair is pure white)

Eye Color: Pastel Green (In the Kingdom Hearts series, they're blue)

Physical Features: (Human Form): Beneath his glove on his left hand is a tattoo of the number "1". He has the ability to sprout a single, black angel wing from his right shoulder. In the Kingdom Hearts series, the wing has a thumb (talon). In Kingdom Hearts 2, he has two extra wings sprouting from each hip (for a total of three) which also have thumbs, and are instead colored dark blue.
(Bizarro-Sephiroth): Sephiroth's larval form before ascending to godhood is that of a giant parasitic cocoon based on his image, with a smaller, human-sized one mounted on the larger one's head. The larger one is hunched over and is very muscular, especially around the shoulders. It has long horns portruding from its head, and its hands have been replaced with yellow, bladed feathers. The waist down has been completely replaced with a golden larval sac (called its core) with a circular gold plate sticking out in front. The larval sac acts as it's "tail", and does not damage due to Bizarro-Sephiroth constantly floating in the air. Its torso, face, hair, abdomen, and arms are cool silver, its shoulders, horns, eyes, and ribs are green, and its face has two red marks on each corner of its forehead and on the outside edges of its eyes (a total of six red marks). The larger one has Sephiroth's bangs. The smaller image of Sephiroth is mounted on top of the larger one, permanently fused from the waist down on the bump behind the larger one's head. Though shaped like a normal human, it has no face and is colored completely cool silver. The smaller one has Sephiroth's hair, minus the bangs.
(Seraphim-Sephiroth): Sephiroth's god-form is that of a "fallen seraphim". He no longer has any bangs, and his legs and right arm are no more. His legs have been replaced with six angelic wings with yellow spines and purple tips. His right arm has been replaced with a very colorful, demonic wing. It has an orange spine, purple feathers and yellow primaries, with a giant red "blade" that portrudes from the thumb. What looks like a purple eye is seen at the base of this wing in front of Sephiroth's right shoulder. Directly behind Sephiroth are two golden halos that float parallel to one another, unmoving. The closest one is attached to both of Sephiroth's hips, and has an emblem of a sunrise ( or sunset?) at the top. The second halo just floats by itself about two feet behind the first. Sephiroth's hair constantly floats in the middle of these two halos.

Costumes: In all of Sephiroth's appearances, he wears the same costume with slight differences. The main part of his outfit is his black, leather trenchcoat. Its length goes halfway down his shins and has a raised collar that folds down. He wears a belt around his waist on the outside of his coat. On each shoulder, he wears silver pauldrons with three circular holes near the inner corners (the holes, when connected, form a triangle). The pauldrons remain attached to the coat due to large silver straps that stretch over his shoulders. He wears black, leather gloves accompanied by steel cuffs around his wrists. Sephiroth wears his coat open, bearing the chest, which is covered by two belts in the shape of an X under his coat. He wears a bronze abdomen guard displaying the logo for SOLDIER ( what looks like an anchor) under his coat. He wears black, leather pants (loose, not tight), and long, black leather boots which are held up by two small, silver belts under his knee.
(Final Fantasy VII, Before Crisis, Last Order, Ehrgeiz, Itadaki Street Special, Final Fantasy Anthology): His original costume has no buttons or zippers on the coat or boots. The belt around his waist was off-center, and the buckle rested to the side, beneath his right torso.
(Advent Children, Crisis Core): Buttons have been added to his coat, but only to the cape part beneath the waist. His boots now only have one belt each, and his steel wrist-guards have been transformed into silver cuffs on the coat, rather than a piece of armor.
(Kingdom Hearts series): Not including his wing, Sephiroth's costume has a few alterations. His coat now has a thick, red lining and is spiked at various ends around the cape. He has blades shaped like bat wings (black spines, and red patagiums) on the outer edges of his forearms. His belt now has an emblem of two angel wings for a buckle. His abdomen-guard no longer has visible logo, as it is covered by two horizontal belts.
(Note: At the end of Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth's costume consists of only his pants and boots)

Skills: Not only is Sephiroth the world's best swordsman, he is also its best military tactician. He has the ability to swing his enormous sword 17 consecutive times (Omnislash), as well as a "Flash" attack that attacks 13 times in an instant.

Weaknesses: Sephiroth remains undefeated by everything except for Cloud's variations of the Omnislash attack and the magical Keyblade.

Weapons: In all of his appearances, Sephiroth's trademark weapon is his Masamune, a nodachi (long katana). It's length and details vary between media.
(Final Fantasy VII): A 7 ft. katana. The handle is 1 ft. and the blade is 6 ft. The handle and handguard are both black and there is no pommel. The handguard is rectangular, parallel to the angle of the blade and handle, with two rectangular arches on both sides (to make an incomplete "+" symbol). It has a reverse blade (meaning the edge is on the inside curve of the blade), which is entirely silver.
(Advent Children): A 7 ft. katana. The handle is 1 ft. and the blade is 6 ft. The handle is now blue with a line of gold diamonds. Its handguard and pommel are also gold. The blade is normally edged, and is silver with a blue tint.
(Kingdom Hearts 1): A 10 ft. katana. The handle is 2 ft. and the blade is 8 ft. The blade is silver, and the false edge is light blue. It has a black handle with a silver pommel and a silver rectangular handguard parallel to the angle of the blade and handle (no extra arches like the original).
(Kingdom Hearts 2): A 12 ft. katana. The handle is 2 ft. and the blade is 10 ft. The blade is silver, and the false edge is light blue. It has a black handle with a silver pommel and a silver rectangular handguard parallel to the angle of the blade and handle (no extra arches like the original).
(Ehrgeiz): His Final Fantasy VII sword with 1 ft. subtracted from the blade (6 ft.).

Powers: (Final Fantasy VII): Sephiroth knows all levels of all elemental magic ( Earth, Ice, Lightning, Fire, etc.). But that's BEFORE obtaining the powers of the Lifestream. Afterwhich, he can create tangible/intangible images of himself to do his dirty work; ones that can go through walls, fly, teleport, and still interact with the physical world. He also has semi-complete control over the minds of anyone with JENOVA's cells in them. After obtaining the Black Materia, he uses it to summon a giant living meteor with the hopes of it injuring the Planet enough for it to gather all of its spirit energy to heal it, whereas Sephiroth will absorb all of that energy and gain complete control over every living thing on Earth. In his cocoon form, "Bizarro-Sephiroth", he obtains new abilities. He is able to inflict multiple ailments (one at a time), and a new attack called "Heartless Angel" will bring all of his adversaries to the brink of death. In his final form, "Seraphim-Sephiroth", he has all of his greatest powers. Of these, include "Wall", a shield that nullifies all attacks on him, "Shadow Flare", which blinds an enemy in burning light, "Pale Horse", a truly devastating spell that ails his enemies with all illnesses at once, the return of "Heartless Angel", "Death Sentence", which starts a countdown on the lifespan of an enemy, "Deen", which makes an enemy implode, and his ultra-famous "Super Nova". Super Nova summons a comet from another galaxy and proceeds to destroy every planet between Pluto and Mars on its way to the Sun. Once there, the Sun is "killed" by the comet and its death sequence (a galactic expansion) commences. After the expanding Sun incinerates Mercury and Venus, it closes in on Earth, where Sephiroth proceeds to concentrate all of that cosmic energy at his opponents (which also spares the Planet he's trying to become god of).
(Advent Children): Even after being killed, the JENOVA cells that make up his DNA allow him to respawn. After again becoming complete (though only possessing one-third of his true strength), Sephiroth, having infected the Lifestream with JENOVA's cells, now has control over it. He can summon a tangible version of it from the sky to manipulate as he pleases.
(Kingdom Hearts 1): Sephiroth "tones down" his powers since he's fighting a kid, but he's still plenty powerful. Sephiroth can teleport quickly and frequently, and doesn't hesitate to do so. "Firaga" will summon a giant pillar of flames to surround and protect him, as well as harm any nearby foes. "Shadow Flare" summons numerous spheres of dark matter that surround his opponent and either home in on them or explode. "Meteorain" allows him to surround himself with a tornado of exploding meteors. And "Sin Harvest", if it doesn't instantly kill his opponent, will drain them of all their spiritual energy.
(Kingdom Hearts 2): Although his full potential is still held back by Cloud's mind, Sephiroth is nonetheless aiming to kill Sora this time. Sephiroth still likes to teleport, and does so more often now. "Firaga" returns, only now it can suck in his opponents, like a flaming vacuum. "Shadow Flare" returns with the same effects. "Meteorain" allows him to summon a rainstorm of meteors that home in on his opponent. And "Heartless Angel" has the same effect as "Sin Harvest", only this one can be cast from high in the air, making the spell difficult to cancel.
(Ehrgeiz): Sephiroth's only power is a watered down Meteorain, which rains 3 small meteorites on his opponent.

Personality: A cold man, Sephiroth doesn't really care about the well-being of those around him, having been raised strictly and parentless. His life was decided for him by Shinra, Inc. to be a member of SOLDIER, so any goals or dreams he had, he was told to forget. Growing up, Sephiroth secluded himself from everyone else, not only feeling that they were inferior, but because he felt he was different, though he was not sure how or why. His life revolved around SOLDIER, and accepted orders only from the President. Any mission he was given, he would carry out quickly and efficiently, regardless of the cost. It wasn't until he read the false information recorded about his own existence that he began to change. He grew a hatred for the entire world, a hatred he felt very passionately. He became ambitious and obsessive, seeking to complete his new goals with the same proficiency as the mssions given to him in SOLDIER. Though Sephiroth, from time to time, briefly becomes overwhelmed with sorrow every time he thinks about how terrible humans are, he looks to the creature he believes to be his mother for inspiration and moves on. He was once revered by the world as a hero, and now Sephiroth reveres himself in that way, believing to be the world's future savior.

History: Sephiroth was born as the result of one of Professor Hojo's crazed experiments. Hojo wanted to see what would occur if the cells of JENOVA were infused with the DNA of a human before it was born. He used his assistant Lucrecia's and his own son, Sephiroth, for the experiment. After he was born, he was taken to the Shinra headquarters in Midgar immediately afterward, to be trained in the world's greatest military facility: SOLDIER. This was to see just how powerful a human with JENOVA cells could become. Hojo destroyed his son's life for the sake of his demented research, and felt no remorse for it. All members of SOLDIER are exposed to a small amount of Mako as indication of their occupation, causing Sephiroth's eyes to glow. Sephiroth quickly became the most powerful and skilled warrior in the world, and remained undefeated by all. He was never told who his parents were, except that his "mother's" name was JENOVA. Though he was familiar with Shinra's "JENOVA Project", he passed it off as mere coincidence. When he was 24, it was Sephiroth that led SOLDIER's army to victory against Wutai, making Midgar the dominant metropolis of the world. A year later, when he was 25, he and two other SOLDIERs, Zack Fair and Angeal Hewley, are given the task of dealing with Sephiroth's former friend, Genesis, who rebelled against Shinra by joining AVALANCHE.
After the mission was complete and during the same year, Sephiroth and Zack were given orders to inspect a broken Mako Reactor in the mountains near a town called Nibelheim (the same town in which Sephiroth was experimentally born and the hometown of Cloud Strife, a Shinra grunt, who also accompanied them on this mission). On the truck ride to Nibelheim, Zack can't relax, so Sephiroth tells him to settle down. Sephiroth then begins to explain the purpose of their mission: to fix a broken Mako Reactor, a leak in which has been producing monsters. When Cloud hears that they're going to Nibelheim, he states that that's where he's from. Sephiroth is saddened by the thought that he may not have a hometown. Around this time, their truck crashes into a dragon, which Sephiroth easily deals with. Upon arriving at Nibelheim, Sephiroth asks Cloud how it feels to be back home, mentioning that he doesn't have a hometown. When asked about his parents, Sephiroth only mentions JENOVA, who he believes died after his birth. After asking a local tour guide, Tifa Lockhart, to guide them to the Mako Reactor the next day, Sephiroth turns in at the inn, but not before the scenery's familiarity crosses his mind.
The next day, Sephiroth, Zack, Cloud, Tifa, Tifa's father, and another townsperson gather in front of the Shinra mansion in preparation for their hike up the mountain. Before they leave, the townsperson requests to take their photograph before they leave. Sephiroth, Zack, and Tifa lined up side by side, and the snapshot was taken. On their way to the Mako Reactor, a bridge they were on broke, and they were forced to take the long route. They passed through caves with glowing walls, and Sephiroth explained that the glow is caused by the high Mako density in the mountains, which is why the Reactor was built there. They found a Mako fountain, and in the center of it was a crystalline substance known as Materia, an element that produces when Mako becomes condensed. Mako, or Spirit Energy, as Sephiroth explained, contains the knowledge of the "Ancients", or the "Cetra", an extinct race that once lived on Earth. When people learned to harness Materia, they could use the powers contained within, a power Sephiroth refused to call magic. He said that a hack scientist he knew named Hojo was the one to originally state the ridiculosity in calling it magic.
Upon arriving at the Reactor, Tifa was ordered to stay outside due to confidential Shinra secrets being housed inside Reactors. Cloud stayed outside to keep her in line. Sephiroth and Zack entered the Reactor and came to a room with steaming pods. Sephiroth examined a door at the top of a staircase, surprised to see that it lead to the main chamber of Shinra's JENOVA Project. Zack found the leak and fixed it, leading Sephiroth to wonder why it broke. After he and Zack peeked inside the pods, they became overwhelmed with fear. Shinra, or rather, Hojo, had been purposely producing monsters by exposing normal humans to high amounts of Mako. Zack then asks how it relates to Sephiroth's exposure to Mako. Sephiroth begins to think, and becomes terrified of his discovery. He begins to believe that he was produced the same way as the monsters, via Mako and JENOVA cells. He wonders if he's the same as them, realizing that it was not coincidence that his "mother's" name was JENOVA, and becomes obsessed with discovering the truth.
Sephiroth confined himself at the inn, and didn't speak to anyone. Then all of a suden, he disappeared into the basement laboratory of the Shinra mansion, where the research notes from the JENOVA Project were stored. Into the books he delved, reading endlessly for days without sleep. He learned that Professor Gast, former head of the Jenova Project, discovered the supposedly dead body of what he assumed to be an Ancient in a 2000-year-old geological stratum. After assuming that JENOVA was an Ancient, the JENOVA Project was begun in order to make Ancients, which are prophecized to find the Promised Land, a land abundant in Mako that Shinra hopes to find and claim. He continued to read as if possessed by something, and not once did the light in the basement go out. Zack remained in the mansion to keep an eye on Sephiroth, concerened about him. Until one day...
Zack made his way to the basement, only to be met with quick, echoing laughter. Upon noticing Zack's arrival, Sephiroth greeted him by calling him an ignorant traitor, and proceeded to explain why. Sephiroth read that two millenia ago, there was a race known as the Cetra, or the Ancients, that traveled from planet to planet on a pilgrimage. However, there were some who elected to lead an easier life, and abandoned their duties in search of luxury. Then a disaster struck the Planet, and the remaining Cetra were sacrificed by the very traitors who neglected them so the Planet could be spared. Those traitors are the ancestors of every human on Earth. The body of a supposed Ancient was discovered 2000 years later by Professor Gast. Ancient prophecies state that the Ancients would find the Promised Land, a land abundant in Mako, so Shinra decided to produce a supersoldier with JENOVA cells in his DNA, with the hopes that he would lead them to glory. Sephiroth is the one that was produced. The Shinra corporation stated that, due to having the same DNA, JENOVA is the "mother" of Sephiroth, and so that is what Sephiroth came to believe.
Furious with the selfish humans he already detested, he proceeded to burn down Nibelheim in a futile attempt to erase the town that bore him. He killed everyone in the town, except for Zack, Cloud, Tifa, Tifa's father, and Tifa's teacher (Zangan). He then headed back to the Mako Reactor in order to be reunited with the "world's true heir": JENOVA. Upon arriving at the Mako Reactor, Tifa's father tried to stop him, but was killed. Sephiroth left his sword there to leave an example for any who'd dare try to stop him again, but Tifa did not heed this warning. He grabbed his sword and chased after him to the top of the pod-room's stairs. But Sephiroth grabbed the sword from her hands and slashed her, causing her to fall down the stairs. Sephiroth then entered the door to JENOVA's chamber, sword in hand. He begins speaking to JENOVA, for he knows she's still alive, unbeknownst to the Shinra researchers. He divulges his new plans to her: to go to the Promised Land and claim it as their own.
Zack shows up and demands an explanation for his actions. Sephiroth answers with his sword, and the two former partners clash, a fight Sephiroth easily wins. Zack is thrown into the pod-room just as Cloud arrives there. Cloud grabs Zack's Buster Sword and runs into JENOVA's room. Sephiroth is caught off-guard, and Cloud rams the sword through his back. Sephiroth survives, but is greatly injured. He takes his sword and chops off JENOVA's head, knowing she'd still be alive, to take with him. He limped out of the room with his sword in one hand and JENOVA's head in the other. Cloud chases after him, but Sephiroth retaliates by sticking his long sword through Cloud's chest and raising him into the air with a single hand. But Cloud, in a burst of adrenaline, manages to overcome Sephiroth's strength and throws him into a boiling vat of Mako, disintegrating Sephiroth.
But even after his spirit energy became assimilated by the Lifestream, the river of life from which Mako is drained, the JENOVA cells that make up his DNA began to reconnect and re-integrate him. His spirit travelled through the Lifestream for five years, absorbing all the knowledge the Ancients had and multiplying his powers a thousandfold. In the Lifestream, he learned that JENOVA wasn't an Ancient, and that she herself was the calamity that threatened the world, but that didn't stop his resentment toward humans. He felt JENOVA was doing the right thing, trying to get rid of the humans. When he was fully restored, he found himself frozen in a cocoon of materia at the Lifestream's center of circulation: the Promised Land.

Goals: (Final Fantasy VII): Even encased in a materia cocoon, Sephiroth can still manipulate the world around him through sheer force of will (psychokinesis, if you will). With his newfound powers, he creates a mental "clone" of himself to travel the world and carry out his plans: to become god of the world; to rule over every living thing on Earth. To obtain godhood, he must absorb all of the Planet's spirit energy, so he devises a plan to gather it all into one place. If he can obtain the Black Materia, he'll be able to use the Ultimate Black Magic: Meteor. When the Meteor crashes into the Earth, the Planet will react. Just like any living creature, when it sustains injury, its blood (Mako in this case) rushes to the injury to heal it. And in the center of all that energy... will be Sephiroth. Once obtaining godhood and becoming the ruler of all life, sin will be no more. Sephiroth will rule existence with his "mother", whom he also plans to restore to normal.
(Kingdom Hearts): Sephiroth makes a non-FF7 related appearance in Kingdom Hearts as cloud's "Heartless", a being born from the darkness in someone's heart. His new goal is apparently to convince Cloud to accept the darkness he denies, for Sephiroth can never be defeated until he does. Little does Cloud know, however, that if he accepts his darkness and yields to it, he'll cease to exist.
(Kingdom Hearts 2): Sephiroth has the same goals as in Kingdom Hearts 1, and for a brief time, attempts to take the Keyblade from Sora.

Fate: (Final Fantasy VII): Sephiroth's first order of business was to bring the remaining parts of JENOVA to him (when all the pieces of JENOVA become one again, it is known as "The Reunion"). He sent his image (henceforeth referred to as Sephiroth himself) to the headquarters of Shinra where her body was held. After violently reclaiming it, he decided to seek revenge on the very person he believed responsible for his pain: President Shinra. He stuck his sword (or a copy of it, anyway) through Shinra's back, killing him, and left the sword there to let the world know he had returned. JENOVA's body in hand, Sephiroth made his way to his next destination: Nibelheim. He had heard that those that were killed five years ago had been experimented on, with JENOVA's cells. Sephiroth needed all of JENOVA's cells for the Reunion to be complete, so he set out to tell the experiments that the Reunion had begun. They would be drawn to follow him wherever he went, due to the JENOVA cells' nature, until they reformed in one place.
To get to Nibelheim, he needed to board a ship in Junon, which was only reachable by crossing the Midgar marshes. While crossing the marshes, he was attacked by a giant cobra known as the Midgar Zolom. Sephiroth defeated it by lunging its head over the tip of a tree. When he arrived in Junon, he snuck onto a cargo ship, killing any soldiers that happened to spot him. During the voyage, the soldiers discovered Sephiroth, and he proceeded to kill any he came into contact with. Until eventually, he was confronted by Cloud. Sephiroth didn't recognize him at first, because Cloud (due to complicated reasons) had taken over the persona of Zack, who was now dead. Cloud demanded to know what Sephiroth was up to, and he answered by knocking them down and leaving a piece of Jenova, which metaporphosized, to fight them.
Sephiroth arrived at Nibelheim to see that Shinra had rebuilt it, populating it with actors to cover up the incident that took place five years earlier. Though the town's original citizens were there too, enshrouded in black cloaks. With small pieces of JENOVA in them, they were obsessed with thoughts of Sephiroth, the Black Materia, and the Reunion. Feeling somewhat nostalgic, he visited the basement of the Shinra Mansion for a brief moment, until he was again interrupted by Cloud. Sephiroth asked Cloud if he was going to take part in the Reunion, and Cloud answered with confusion. Sephiroth told him straight out what it was; that it was when all of JENOVA's cells would rejoin together again. Cloud realizes now that JENOVA couldn't have been an Ancient with those abilities, but before he can ask any more questions, Sephiroth knocks the wind out of him with a "Destruct" Materia and flies off.
With the experiments active, Sephiroth began his next mission: the retrieval of the Black Materia. He sets out for the resting place of the Black Materia: The Temple of the Ancients. Upon arriving, he finds the entrance has already been unsealed. He finds the one responsible inside: Tseng, leader of Shinra's spy group, the Turks. Sephiroth thanks him for opening the seal, and a terrified Tseng asks what the Temple is for. Sephiroth explains that the Temple is where the Ancients stored their knowledge and history, via cryptic images carved into the wall.  Sephiroth then states... that he is becoming "One With the Planet". Tseng asks if he can really do that, and Sephiroth vaguely explains his plans to him. After his explanation, he attacks Tseng, telling him not to fear death, for it is through death that his spirit energy is released, and will eventually become a part of him. Fortunately for him, Tseng lives and escapes. Soon after, Cloud and friends show up and find Sephiroth.
Aerith Gainsborough (friend of Cloud's and the world's TRUE last remaining Ancient) asks Sephiroth his plans. And at last (probably growing weary of explaining it), Sephiroth explains his plans in the utmost detail. Sephiroth says, "It's simple. Once the Planet is hurt, it gathers Spirit Energy to heal the injury. The amount of energy gathered depends on the size of the injury. What would happen if there was an injury that threatened the very life of the Planet? Think how much energy would be gathered! Hahaha. And at the center of that injury, will be me. All that boundless energy will be mine. By merging with all the energy of the Planet, I will become a new life form, a new existence. Melding with the Planet, I will cease to exist as I am now. Only to be reborn as a 'God' to rule over every soul." When they ask how he plans to injure the Planet, he points out a nearby mural. The wall depicted what looked like a large meteor crashing into the Earth.
Sephiroth left in order to retrieve one of the experiments. The Black Materia could only be obtained by solving the puzzles in the temple, but the puzzle-solver would be crushed in the process. Sephiroth decided to use one of the experiments to obtain it, but shortly after he left, Cloud and company discovered a way to retrieve the Materia with no casualties. Sephiroth then took advantage of Cloud's newly developed mental disorder and convinced him to hand over the Black Materia. Black Materia in hand, the replica of Sephiroth began to make its way back to the Promised Land (the North Pole), where his real body lied.
Aerith Gainsborough, in an attempt to counter the effects of Meteor before it was even summoned, travelled to the City of the Ancients alone to try and activate the White Materia, which would summon "Holy". However, Sephiroth interluded by murdering Aerith before the incantation was complete, thus tainting the Holy spell. Cloud grieved over Aerith's death deeply, and Sephiroth was shocked to see that a mere human was capable of emotion, given the greedy, selfish ways Sephiroth stereotyped them with. Sephiroth immediately dismisses it as an act, and leaves another piece of JENOVA for them to deal with while he made his escape. After Cloud defeated it, JENOVA told Cloud that he was nothing but a puppet.
Sephiroth continues his journey North, killing the experiments that showed up so that their spirit energy could be assimilated more easily. When he finally reaches the Promised Land, the Sephiroth replica encounters Cloud and company one last time, transforming himself into the likeness of JENOVA. The replica is defeated, and Cloud re-obtains the Black Materia. He has his companion Red XIII hold onto it while he went ahead to deal with the real Sephiroth. When Cloud reaches the chamber in which Sephiroth rests, he sends him and his friends to an illusionary dimension to manipulate him more.
Sephiroth shows Cloud and his friends an image of Nibelheim from five years ago, and proceeds to explain to Cloud the truth about what happened (because Cloud's memory of the incident had been drastically altered). Sephiroth uses this to his advantage, and tricks Cloud into believing that he was a failed experiment, constructed by Hojo. That Cloud was an incomplete Sephiroth-clone, not even given a serial number. Tifa tries to get Cloud to stop listening, but Cloud's confusion overwhelms him.
Meanwhile, Sephiroth makes a replica of Tifa and sends it to Red XIII. The fake Tifa tricks Red XIII into believing that Cloud was in danger, convincing him to rush to Cloud's side. Cloud, now under the influence of Sephiroth's lies, takes the Black Materia from Red XIII and gives it to the real Sephiroth. Sephiroth proceeds to activate the Black Materia, and this in turn awakens the WEAPONs, five gigantic beasts bent on destroying anything Sephiroth orders them to. A week later, the Meteor becomes visible, hovering over the Earth high up in space.
Now completely secluded deep in a crater at the North, Sephiroth surrounded the crater with a giant barrier, and used the WEAPONs in attempts to destroy anything with the potential to stop him, including Cloud and Shinra's giant Mako Cannon, the Sister Ray. Eventually, the Sister Ray succeeds in destroying Sephiroth's barrier, and Cloud seizes this opportunity to infiltrate the Northern Crater to take on Sephiroth. Cloud and friends reach the bottom of the crater and are confronted by a complete version of JENOVA, which they must defeat. Afterwhich, Sephiroth himself, still in his cocoon, begins to manipulate them through sheer force of will. However, Cloud and friends are able to break the hold Sephiroth had on them. Sephiroth began to emerge from his cocoon, slowly evolving into the godlike being he'd aspired to be thanks to the JENOVA cells being reunited. His cocoon form was known as Bizarro-Sephiroth, and challenged Cloud to a battle that required the teamwork of him and his friends.
But they're too late. Sephiroth emerges from his cocoon, as the seraphim he now was: Seraphim-Sephiroth. Even though Sephiroth manipualted the cosmos themselves in their final struggle, Cloud and company miraculously emerged victorious. Believing the worst to be over, Cloud and friends prepared to leave the crater, when Sephiroth called out to Cloud. Sephiroth had one last chance: a battle of wills. Sephiroth challenged Cloud to a one-on-one mental battle, and was defeated by Cloud's most powerful attack: Omnislash. Though Sephiroth was now dead, the Meteor still plummetted toward the Earth. Holy emerged and tried to stop it, but because the incantation remained incomplete, Holy begun having the opposite effect, strenghtening Meteor rather than stopping it. However, now that Sephiroth was no longer in control of the Lifestream, the Planet summoned it to destroy the Meteor once and for all.
(Advent Children): But with both Sephiroth and all of JENOVA in the Lifestream, the Lifestream slowly became tainted. Two years later, the JENOVA cells within Sephiroth's DNA allowed him to once again respawn. The Planet did its best to prevent this, and as a result, Sephiroth respawned as three different people: Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz. These three people had confused memories, and acted as their own persons. When Kadaj came into contact with JENOVA's head, absorbing the cells from within it, it created enough energy for Sephiroth to manifest his will through Kadaj, allowing him to become tangible again (though he was now only at one-third of his power). With Meteor gone, Sephiroth's new plan was to control the tainted Lifestream (for if it destroyed Meteor, it was obviously more powerful) in order to merge with the Planet. He would then use the Planet as a vessel, find another Planet, and begin a whole new world, one devoid of sin as he so longed for. But Cloud wasn't about to let the people of the current world die, and again, fought Sephiroth in a final battle to the death. Though Sephiroth easily toyed with Cloud throughout the battle, he pushed Cloud beyond his limit when he threatened his loved ones. In a rush of adrenaline, and a desire to protect the world he cherished, Cloud defeated Sephiroth yet again using his new attack: Omnislash Ver. 5. Before being reassimilated into the Lifestream, Sephiroth says, "I will... never be a memory", indicating that he may return.
(Kingdom Hearts): Sephiroth is challenged by Sora at Olympus Coliseum, a fight he loses, but is not defeated in. After Sora leaves, Sephiroth challenges Cloud, and they fight brielfy. However, in the middle of their fight, Sora defeats Xehanort's Heartless, and before they can finish their battle, Sephiroth and Cloud are sent back to their own world, Radiant Garden, and become separated.
(Kingdom Hearts 2): Sephiroth appears before Sora a year later during the Heartless attack on Radiant Garden. Sephiroth says that he's not planning on doing anything to Cloud, because it is Cloud who must decide his own fate. He makes his appearance before Cloud, killing three or four "Armored Soldier" Heartless in the process. Cloud has been looking for Sephiroth, intent on the idea that defeating Sephiroth will make his darkness vanish. But Sephiroth knows that unless Cloud accepts his past moves on, his darkness will never disapparate. Sephiroth vanishes for a while, until he is again confronted by Sora. Sephiroth asks him what Cloud is up to, and Sora pretends he doesn't know. Looking past his affiliation with Cloud, Sephiroth begins to wonder just who Sora, Donald, and Goofy are. When he asks them, they refuse to tell. Sephiroth becomes intrigued by the sword Sora is carrying, his Keyblade. Sephiroth knows the legends of the Keyblades, and challenges Sora to a battle in an attempt to claim it. Sephiroth loses, but sustains no injury whatsoever. Sephiroth knows that only Cloud can finally get rid of him, and he asks Sora to summon Cloud for him. Cloud arrives, and the two begin fighting. The battle remains at a stalemate, though Sephiroth has a constant upper-hand. Sephiroth knows that fighting cannot defeat him, because as long as Cloud denies his past, his darkness will never die. Tifa shows up and tells Sephiroth he's wrong, and that Cloud just needs to move on, past or no past. Sephiroth becomes angry at Tifa for revealing the secret to Cloud and begins fighting her. Inevitably, Cloud accepts Tifa's help, and attacks Sephiroth. Everything glows white, and Cloud and Sephiroth vanish. What happens after that is still a mystery.

Lines: (Final Fantasy VII): "In my veins courses the blood of the Ancients. I am one of the rightful heirs to this planet!"
"Hey. Settle down." "... just like a kid." "... this isn't a typical mission." "Why do you say that?" "... I thought you wanted a briefing? Our mission is to investigate an old Mako Reactor. There have been reports of it malfunctioning, and producing brutal creatures. First, we will dispose of those creatures. Then, we'll locate the problem and neutralize it." "The Mako Reactor at Nibelheim." "Hmm... hometown..." "That would be our monster..."
"How does it feel? It's your first time back to your hometown in a long time, right? So how does it feel? I wouldn't know because I don't have a hometown..." "My mother is JENOVA. She died right after she gave birth to me. My father..." "What does it matter...? All right, let's go." "The Mako smell is pretty bad here."
"We leave for the Reactor at dawn. Make sure you get to sleep early. All that we need is one lookout, so you others, get some rest. Oh, that's right... You may visit your family and friends."
"... This scenery....... I feel like I know this place............ We have an early start tomorrow. You should get some sleep soon." "... I'm not going to wake you up tomorrow." "I've hired a guide to the Mako Reactor. I've heard she's young. I hope we can rely on her..."
"Once the guide gets here, we're heading out." "... Trust me." "Then there's no problem if you protect her.... Let's go."
"Everyone seems to be alright. Can we get back to where we were?" "It may sound cold, but we've got no time to search for him. We can't go back now, so we must go on. We'll travel together from here."
"It must be the Mako Energy. This mountain is especially abundant in in it. That's why the Mako Reactor was built here."
"A Mako fountain. It's a miracle of nature." "Materia. When you condense Mako energy, Materia is produced. It's very rare to be able to see Materia in its natural state." "You're in SOLDIER and you don't even know that? ... the knowledge and wisdom of the Ancients is held in the Materia. Anyone with this knowledge can freely use the powers of the Land and the Planet. That knowledge interacts between ourselves and the Planet calling up magic..... or so they say." "Ha, ha, ha!" "A man once told me never to use an unscientific term such as 'mysterious power'! It shouldn't even be called 'magic'! I still remember how angry he was." "Hojo of Shinra, Inc. ... An inexperienced man assigned to take over the work of a great scientist. He was a walking mass of complexes."
"Only authorized people are allowed in. This place is full of Shinra's industrial secrets." "Take care of the lady."
"This is the reason for the malfunction. This part is broken. Cloud, close the valve." "Why did it break...?" "... now I see, Hojo. But, even doing this, will never put you on the same level as Professor Gast." "This is a system that condenses and freezes the Mako energy... that is, when it's working correctly. Now, what does Mako energy become when it's further condensed?" "Right, normally. But Hojo put something else in there. ... Take a look. Look through the window." "Normal members of SOLDIER are humans that have been showered with Mako. You're different from the others, but still human. But what are they? They've been exposed to a high degree of Mako, far more than you." "Exactly. And it's Hojo of Shinra that produced these monsters. Mutated living organisms produced by Mako energy. That's what these monsters really are." "N... no.... ... Was I? ... Was I created this way too? Am I the same as all these monsters.....?" "You saw it! All of them.... were humans...." ".... I've always felt since I was small... That I was different from the others. Special, in some way. But... not like this...."
"Am I... human?"
".... an organism that was apparently dead, was found in a 2000 year old geological stratum. Professor Gast named that organsim, JENOVA... X Year, X Month, X Day. JENOVA confirmed to be an Ancient... X Year, X Month, X Day. JENOVA Project approved. The use of Mako Reactor 1 approved for use..." "My mother's name is JENOVA... JENOVA Project... Is this just a coincidence? Professor Gast... Why didn't you tell me anything? ... Why did you die?" "Leave me alone."
"Ha, ha, ha..." "Who is it?! Hmph... traitor." "You ignorant traitor. I'll tell you. This Planet orignally belonged to the Cetra. Was was an intinerant race. They would migrate in, settle the Planet, then move on... At the end of their harsh, hard journey, they would find the Promised Land and supreme happiness. But, those that disliked the journey appeared. Those who disliked the migrations built shelters and elected to lead an easier life. They took that which the Cetra and the Planet had made without giving one whit in return! Those are your ancestors." "Long ago, disaster struck this Planet. Your ancestors escaped... They survivied because they hid. The Planet was saved by sacrificing the Cetra. After that, your ancestors continued to increase. Now all that's left of the Cetra is in these reports." "Don't you get it? An Ancient named JENOVA was found in the geological stratum of 2000 years ago. The JENOVA Project. the JENOVA Project wanted to produce people with the powers of the Ancients... no, the Cetra. ... I am the one that was produced." "Yes. Professor Gast, leader of the JENOVA Project and genius scientist, produced me." "Out of my way. I'm going to see my mother."
"Mother, I'm here to see you. Please, open this door."
"Mother, let's take this Planet back together. I've thought of a great idea. Let's go to the Promised Land." "Ha, ha, ha..... They've come again, mother." "With her superior power, knowledge, and magic, Mother was destined to become the ruler of this Planet. But they... Those worthless creatures... are stealing the Planet from Mother. But now I'm here with you, so don't worry." "Ha, ha, ha... my sadness? What do I have to be sad about? I am the Chosen One. I have been chosen to be the leader of this Planet. I have orders to take this Planet back from you stupid people for the Cetra. What am I supposed to be sad about?"
"........ Who are you?" "Cloud..." "... the time..... is now......"
"Being here brings back memories. Are you going to participate in the Reunion?" "JENOVA will be at the Reunion. JENOVA will rejoin at the Reunion, becoming a calamity from the skies." "... I see. I don't think you have the right to participate. I will go north past Mt. Nibel. If you wish to find out... then follow."
"So you opened the door. Well done." "A lost reasure house of knowledge. The wisdom of the Ancients..." "I am becoming one with the Planet." "You stupid fools. You have never even thought about it. All the spirit energy of this Planet. All its wisdom... knowledge... I will meld with it all. I will become one with it... It will become one with me." "The way....... lies here. Only death awaits you all. But do not fear. For it is through death that new spirit energy is born. Soon, you will live again as a part of me."
"So cold. I am always by your side. Come." "Splendid. A treasure house of knowledge..." "Look well." "At that which adds to the knowledge of..." "I am becoming one with the Planet." "Mother..... it's almost time.... Soon..... we will become one." "It's simple. Only to be reborn as a 'God' to rule over every soul." "Behold that mural. The Ultimate Destructive Magic... Meteor." "Ha ha ha... It is not me."
"... Ah, but I have. I'm far superior to the Ancients. I became a traveler of the Lifestream and gained the knowledge and wisdom of the Ancients. I also gained the knowledge and wisdom of those after the extinction of the Ancients. And soon, I will create the future." "Ha, ha, ha... I wonder?" "Wake up!" "There, Cloud... good boy." "....... Well done."
"Hmm........ She's thinking of interfering? She will be a difficult one, don't you think? We must stop that girl soon."
"Do not worry. Soon the girl will become part of the Planet's energy. All that is left is to go North. The 'Promised Land' waits for me over the snowy fields. There I will become a new being by uniting with the Planet. As will this girl..." "What are you saying? Are you trying to tell me that you have feelings too?" "Ha, ha, ha...... Stop acting as if you were sad. There's no reason to act as though you're angry either. Because, Cloud. You are..."
"This is the end for all of you." "You're right. This is the end of this body's usefulness."
"All right, let's go." "I see you finally understand." "Oh, is that so? You are just a puppet... you have no heart... and cannot feel any pain... How can there be any meaning in the memory of such a being? What I have shown you is reality. What you remember, that is the illusion. ... Do you understand?" "Ha, ha, ha...... I want to take you back to your real self. The one who gave me the Black Materia that day... Who would have ever thought a failed experiment would prove so useful? Hojo would die if he knew." "Five years ago, you were...... constructed by Hojo, piece by piece, right after Nibelheim was burnt. A puppet made up of vibrant JENOVA cells, her knowledge, and the power of Mako. An incomplete Sephiroth-clone. Not even given a number. ... That is your reality." "Ha, ha, ha... Tifa... Why are you so worried and scared by those words? Hmm... Shall I show everyone here what's in your heart?" "Ha, ha, ha... You look like you're not feeling well." "Cloud... Don't blame Tifa. The ability to change one's looks, voice, and words, is the power of JENOVA. Inside of you, JENOVA has merged with Tifa's memories, creating you. Out of Tifa's memory... A boy named Cloud might've just been a part of them." "Ha, ha, ha...... Think, Cloud! ... Cloud? Ha, ha, ha...... Oh, excuse me. You never had a name." "You still don't understand? Then... Do you remember the picture that we took before we headed for Mt. Nibel? ... Tifa, you remember, right? But there is no way he would know. Now... what happened to that picture?" "....... is this it? ... Do you want to see it? It turned out pretty good."
"(As Tifa) Red XIII, you're here! I'm so glad!!" "Everyone's waiting! Cloud's in trouble!" "Over there!" "...... hee hee hee... And remember..." "(As Sephiroth)... the Black Materia!"
"How does it feel? It's your first time back to your hometown in a long time, right? So how does it feel? I wouldn't know because I don't have a hometown..." "My mother is JENOVA. She died right after she gave birth to me. My father..." "What does it matter...? All right, let's go."
"Aaarrrgh...... who... who are you?"
"How does it feel? It's your first time back to your hometown in a long time, right?"
"Just like you." "Don't... push... your luck..." "... It can't be!"
(Last Order): "I'll go pick you up now."
"Mother... I came to see you..."
"Mother. Let's take this Planet back together. I came up with a good plan. Let's go to the Promised Land... Mother." "Mother, those fools came again. Mother was supposed to become the ruler of this Planet with her superior power and knowledge. But, those fools... Those worthless fools... snatched the Planet away from you, right Mother? But, please don't be sad anymore. Come with me." "We finally meet, Mother..." "You traitor...!" "I was the Chosen One. I am the chosen existence that is to become this planet's ruler. In order to return this Planet from you fools to the hands of the Cetra's, I was born. For mother's sake." "It's alright now, Mother." "Who are you...?" "Y-You bastard..."
"Mother."
"By the likes of you..." "By the likes of you...!" "Don't push it, kid!" "By the likes of you human beings... You really thought you could defeat me?!" "Remember carefully..." "Impossible... What the hell are you...?" "Mother... come to the Promised Land with me..."
(Advent Children): "Good to see you, Cloud." "Your Geostigma is gone... That's too bad." "The last thoughts of Geostigma are dead. Those remnants will join the Lifestream and girdle the Planet. Choking it. Corroding it. What I want, Cloud, is to sail the darkness of the cosmos with this Planet as my vessel... just as my mother did long ago." "Well... that's up to you, Cloud."
"Ohh... Where did you find this strength?"
"I thought of a wonderful present for you." "Shall I give you despair?"
"On your knees. I want you to beg for forgiveness."
"Tell me what you cherish most. Give me the pleasure of taking it away." "Hmph."
"I will... never be a memory."
(Kingdom Hearts): "Sin Harvest." "Power." "Come." "Prepare yourself!" "Know your place!" "Let's see what you've got!" "I am the Chosen One!" "Come... together... Be one!" "That's enough." "Dodge this!" "Feel my blade!" "Take this!" "Meet your fate!" "Come... Show me what you've got!" "I'm... fading..."
"I was searching for you, too." "If that's so, I shall draw you into the darkness. Into the nightmare that forever deprives you of light, from which you can never awaken!"
(Kingdom Hearts 2): "Huh. Did Cloud tell you that? Then he must understand now." "Nothing. Cloud is the one who hungers for darkness." "I see. He wants to meet me again. Then I should give him what he wants. That last bit of light is always the hardest... to snuff out."
"I understand that you've been looking for me." "Can you do it? That darkness comes from your own dark memories. Do you think you can erase your past?" "Face it. You turn your back on the present and live in the past. Because the light of the present is too much." "I know... Because... I AM you."
"What is Cloud doing?" "Hmph. By the way... you three... Who are you?" "Well... that's an interesting sword you're carrying." "I see... So that's a Keyblade. And I suppose you must be its chosen wielder." "I wonder if it won't change its mind... once I defeat you."
"Show me your strength..." "That's enough." "Know your place." "Give into the dark." "Perish now!" "Ascend... Heartless Angel." "All shall become one." "The time has come. Let us rejoice." "What intriguing power..."
"I admit you're very skilled... But apparently, Cloud is the only one who can eliminate me. Tell Cloud to come here. Tell him Sephiroth is looking to settle things."
"Did you give him my message?" "Cloud... You'll never let go of the darkness..." "You'll never let go of your past..." "Absurd. Defeating me is meaningless. You know that more than anyone, Cloud. No matter how many times I fall, your darkness keeps calling me back!" "You can't. He'll never let go of the darkness." "Is that right? Let's see what this light of yours can do." "The light doesn't suit you." "Stop!"
(Ehrgeiz): (his only line is a really cool laugh)

Other Info:

Voice Actors: English: Lance Bass (Kingdom Hearts), George Newbern (Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts 2). Japanese: Shinichiro Miki (Ehrgeiz), Toshiyuki Morikawa ( Kingdom Hearts series, Advent Children and Last Order)
Company: Squaresoft

Popularity/Publicity: Sephiroth is without doubt the most popular villain in the world of fiction. He's appeared in numerous games (even ones that have no relation to his story) and the amount of fanart for him is countless. He's the villain most cosplayed by fans, and many other villains have been based on him. In his appearances in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Sephiroth was the most difficult adversary in both games (so difficult, that fighting him had to be optional). Sephiroth is a playable character in the Itadaki Street Special series, Ehrgeiz, and Dissidia. Ever since his debut in Final Fantasy VII, several remixes have been made of his theme song, the "One-Winged Angel" ("Kata Sabasa no Tenshi" in Japanese). The "One-Winged Angel" has become the most popular video game song in the world. Sephiroth's current popularity quite possibly exceeds that of every other fictional character in the world of gaming.

Other: Sephiroth's victory dance involves swinging his sword, with his left hand, in an X shape, and then sheathing it through his belt.
Sephiroth's name comes from the Kabbalah, in which the Ten Sephiroth of Nothingness on the Tree of Life represent different aspects of God.
Seraphim-Sephiroth's six angel wings are represented by the highest rank of angel, known as a seraphim, from the Hebrew bible.
Sephiroth's birthplace, Nibelheim, and the place in which he grew up, Midgar, are both the names of cities from Norse mythology.
The two halos behind Seraphim-Sephiroth are known as an Empyrean Halo, or Celestial Rose, which is the highest layer of Heaven and the residence of God, as stated in the Divine Comedy.
The place in which Cloud and friends battle Seraphim-Sephiroth is known as the Twirling Heavens, a fusion of Holy and JENOVA's influence.
Sephiroth was based on Lucifer (Satan) himself, as a once revered man, who fell from grace, and became the world's worst nightmare, undying, and seeking to attain godhood through the influence of its citizens and change the world in his image. Stories in the Middle Ages describe Satan as a man in a black cape who travelled the world, leaving despair and destruction in his wake. Even Sephiroth's left-handedness is based on Satan, as the name Satan comes from the word "sinister", which is Latin for "left-handed". It's also indicative of his Kingdom Hearts role as Cloud's Heartless, a being from the darkness who attempts to convince Cloud to give into it.

Knowledge is power... Knowledge is power...
And his age is exactly as I predicted...(something that I attempted to deduce after sticking my face to the computer screen staring at a screenshot where his age was about the size of ten pixels...)
I'm trying to figure out how his pauldrons really fit together in advent children...so far, I've been forced to believe that they are magnetic...the middle piece seems to be attached to nothing, but it's not flying away either...
Do you perhaps have any speculations? Thanks!
:iconcreatorsoul:
forgot to add something else... Sephy's "trech coat" in AC, if that's what it may still be called after I say this, is actually sleeveless...The sleeves are not actually connected to the coat at all. (In the original game, it is connected...)

I went through AC frame by frame, twice, to find that out (while attempting to figure out how the pauldrons work)....there's one frame when he's fighting through the falling debrie that shows it...

I call it my "ultimate discovery" :P
